5th International Pottery School in Radovljica - from 20th to 23rd May 2013
Meetings of Masters - The European Pottery Tradition
During this year’s 5th Pottery School in Radovljica we will explore the origin and formation of the European pottery tradition.
The content of the programme will meaningfully cover five time periods.
The pre-ancient ways of bowl making will be presented by potters from the village Zlakusa in Serbia. They have preserved an almost identical method of material preparation, shaping on a slow potter's wheel and firing pottery with wood on an open charcoal pile, as Neolithic potters have done. We will get acquainted with and analyze the visual language of symbols and messages that reveal the spiritual values and understanding of life of a pre-ancient man.
In the second part, we will analyze the ancient pottery, namely the outline of time and conditions for the development of rich forms, motifs and techniques of manufacture. Art analysis of the ancient ceramic forms will help us understand the principles of classic moulding. We will meet the technological side of the three-step method of firing (oxidation, reduction, re-oxidation) used by ancient potters for the decoration of their stoneware (black and red figuration).
In the third part, we will deal with the development of silicate glazes, knowledge of the Middle East, North Africa, Spain to Medieval and Renaissance Italy. We will come across the development of archaic techniques of decoration, such as fayence, majolica, as well as the development of ornament and stylization.
The fourth part will examine Slovenian traditional pottery and its diversity. We will get acquainted with how the shape and decoration have developed according to different historical influences. Different ways of contemporary heritage interpretation will be presented.
The last part will be dedicated to contemporary ceramics, its place and the presentation of interesting practices.
